Akaname, or 'Filth Licker'

Updated: Dec 13, 2021

This week in #CreatureoftheWeek we find find out about a grotesque creature from Japanese folklore called #Akaname, which translates to #FilthLicker.

Yokai are creatures in Japanese folklore that are usually terrifying monsters or supernatural spirits. Perhaps the most odd #Yokai I have come across is the Akaname, or "Filth Licker".

Filth Licker is literally born from human filth and inhabits dirty bathrooms. His disgusting red skin is greasy all over, his hair black is slimy and his extraordinarily long tongue is used to lick the scum, grease, mould, hair and other filth left around in the bathroom.

He looks like a child-sized goblin with a short, hunched over and twisted body. He can have one eye or two and anything between one to five clawed fingers and toes on each hand and foot. You wouldn't want to bump into one during a late night bathroom break!

My first thought when reading about Filth Licker, like many of you I'm sure, is Great! He can lick my bathroom clean! He particularly loves to lick the the scum that builds up behind toilets and I always forget to clean there.

However, while this might seem like a cost-effective cleaning service, Filth Licker stinks, he spreads disease and although usually shy and stays clear of humans, he has been known to attack people on the toilet.

But do not fret! Filth Licker HATES clean bathrooms. So just give your bathroom a good scrub every now and again and you should be fine.

Have you encountered a Filth Licker? Or perhaps you want to tell us about your favourite Yokai? Please feel free to comment below!
