Beowulf

Updated: Jun 5, 2023

#Beowulf is an Old English epic #poem that is considered one of the oldest surviving works of English #literature. It tells the story of a heroic warrior named Beowulf who travels to the kingdom of #Denmark to help #King Hrothgar rid his land of a fearsome monster named #Grendel.

First written down in #manuscript form in #OldEnglish in the 10th century, it's a poem that will keep you on the edge of your seat! From heroism, loyalty, the power of fate, the fleeting nature of human life.... it explores some heavy concepts and it's story structure has inspired many stories since (including Steven Spielberg's Jaws).

You have the option to immerse yourself in the story of Beowulf through various mediums: reading, listening, or watching. If you're anything like me, you might even want to do all three! Dive into this epic tale through the links I've provided below.

Read Beowulf

One of the best translations of Beowulf is by poet #SeamusHeaney. Read his translation here:

Listen to Beowulf

If you would rather sit back listen to the story of Beowulf, here is Seamus Heaney bringing the story to life with his expressive voice and intoxicating Irish accent.

The #audiobook also available on Audible.

Watch Beowulf

Let's not forget about the 2007 film written by Neil Gaiman and Roger Avary and directed by Robert Zemeckis (Director of the best trilogy ever, Back to the Future!). It was much better than I expected it to be and well worth a watch.
