Summoning the Devil at Devil's Dyke

Updated: Dec 13, 2021

How did this massive ditch get here? Who dug it? Where does it lead? Trixie and Nigel attempt to summon the #Devil to get some answers.

If you walk to the bottom of the #DevilsDyke you will find two mounds. Legend has it that these are the graves of the devil and his wife and if you run around them seven times backwards whilst holding your breath that the devil will appear.

Now, me and Nigel thought it would be pretty cool to find out the story of how, why and who dug the Devil's Dyke directly from the devil himself, so we got in the car and headed over to the dyke, ready to summon the devil and get some answers.

Our journey started promisingly. We parked up and we made our way down through the middle of the dyke, following the path and keeping an eye out for the graves as we walked. It wasn't long before we found them.

You can see them here, by the trees 👇 I wonder how many people walk over these mounds every day not knowing what they are!

Me and Nigel knew, and we were ready to do some summoning. We had been practising holding our breath all morning so we set straight to it. The instructions were clear, run backwards, seven times, holding your breath... how hard could it be?

It turns out pretty hard.

There were a few issues:

  1. The graves are quite far apart making holding your breath even once round near on impossible

  2. Running backwards across the hazardous terrain was not easy

  3. Turns out Nigel can't even run backwards!

You can see to the left that we are about half way between the graves and it is FAR! 👈

Maybe that's the trick, if you managed to hold you breath for that long you'd be dead, and you'd meet the devil in hell?

Either way, it seemed that today was not the day we were going to meet the devil and find out the story of how, why and who dug the Devil's Dyke. Shame. We would have to find out more the old fashioned way. We headed to the pub to talk to some locals. Click here to find out what we learned.

Me and Nigel haven't given up our efforts to #summonthedevil. This old legend didn't work, granted, but there are always other ways. Rumour has it that if you walk backwards round #ChanctonburyRing seven times (note: no running or holding your breath), then the devil appears with some delicious soup! Although sometimes it's not the devil and it's Julius Caesar with his army, and if it is the devil, then usually he wants your soul. But I think that's where me and Nigel are heading next.

If you've tried to summon the devil at Devil's Dyke, or anywhere else for that matter, then please tell us about it in the comments. Did it work? What was he like?
