The Nuckelavee

Updated: Jun 7, 2023

This week in #CreatureoftheWeek we are looking at the terrifying #Nuckelavee. It is a fascinating and eerie creature from #Scottishfolklore. Orginating on the #OrkneyIslands in the 16th Century, it is considered one of the most evil and hideous beings in Scottish mythology. The name is derived from the Orcadian Scots, combining "nuggle" (meaning devil or demon) and "vay" (meaning skin or covering).

What does it look like?

The Nuckelavee is a #monstrous amalgamation of both #horse and #human features. It has the body of a horse with a human torso protruding from it, as if the two have been fused together. It lacks any skin, revealing its raw and pulsating muscles which ooze with #toxic black liquid. It emits a putrid odour that can make livestock sick and wither crops.

The creature's head is grotesquely oversized and attached directly to its shoulders without a neck. It has one large red eye that burns with malevolence and a mouth filled with sharp, jagged teeth. Legends often describe the Nuckelavee as having long, flailing arms that end in powerful hooves or fins, allowing it to traverse both land and sea.

Is it good or bad?

Definitely bad. The Nuckelavee is an embodiment of #pureevil and brings destruction, disease, and famine wherever it goes. Its presence brings about storms and droughts, it can cause crops to wither, sicken animals, and even cause humans to fall ill.

What should I do if I encounter one?

Encountering the Nuckelavee is a terrifying and deadly experience. It is relentless in its pursuit of victims and can cover great distances with incredible speed.

However! There are four things you can do to protect yourself from the Nuckelavee.

  1. Wear your clothes inside out, this confuses the s**t out of it

  2. Make a cross from #rowanwood. Why not make a few? Hang rowan wood crosses all over your house, cover your car with them, wear them around your neck.

  3. As a #seamonster, it has a severe aversion to fresh water so stay close to lochs and carry lots of water with you. This is also good advice for staying hydrated.

  4. Tell on it. The Mither o' the Sea usually keeps the Nuckelavee in check. If you see the Nuckelavee up to no good, find the #SeaMither and let her know. She is a sea spirit who will capture it and confine it in the depths of the ocean to think about what it's done. Only problem is, she's only about in the summer. Read more about here here.

In summary, this devil of the sea is BAD TO THE BONE and is a #monster to be avoided at all costs. The Nuckelavee is a fearsome creature that embodies the darkest parts of Scottish folklore. It is a reminder of the potential dangers and evil forces that exist in the world.

Beware the Nuckelavee.
